Ingrid recently began working for Target as a contract librarian in creative asset management.

What interests you about your job?

The work I do in creative asset management is an interesting combination of metadata development, digital asset management, digital archiving, and reference. The creative assets in our DAM include marketing photography, graphic design, logos, video, and fonts.

Why did you join the ARLIS/NA Twin Cities chapter and why should others join?

I joined ARLIS/NA Twin Cities shortly after I started my MLIS program at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. I was interested in combining my love for art and for libraries and I wanted to meet other people in my community that had similar interests. I have found membership in the chapter to be incredibly rewarding because I have met a number of fascinating librarians and I have learned a great deal about the local art community in the Twin Cities.

What drew you to art librarianship?

I have wanted to become a librarian since I was three. For me, contentment is being surrounded by books and self-motivated discovery. My interest in art stems from a background in art history. I am fascinated with the contemplation of art and artists’ lives, and the effects of our history on how we interpret and produce art.

What drew you to art librarianship?

I came to art librarianship by way of the publishing industry, where I developed an infatuation with artists’ publications. While I pursued my master’s in library science, I kept following my growing interest in art publishing and art resources. I now work in a library devoted to contemporary art publications with a renowned collection of artists’ books. I have found a field where I am endlessly curious and constantly learning, and I could not be more pleased about it.

Why did you join the ARLIS/NA Twin Cities chapter and why should others join?

I joined the ARLIS/NA Twin Cities chapter as a student to connect with other professionals in the field and learn more about the many art libraries and special collections in the area. I have made meaningful connections through this very welcoming and supportive group of people. If you are looking to expand your network, if you enjoy behind-the-scenes tours, and if you are eager for in-person professional development opportunities, I encourage you to join.

What are you reading?

I am currently reading a book by Siri Hustvedt, The Sorrows of an American. That sounds like a pretty somber title, I know! But I wanted to tell you about it because I am constantly impressed with the artists in Hustvedt’s novels. She has an incredible ability to weave fictional works of art into the page in a very tangible and dynamic way. Read her new novel, The Blazing World, and you will see what I mean.
